Course Description
Dental implants are becoming increasingly common in everyday clinical practice, and their long-term success depends on effective assessment, early identification of disease, and targeted maintenance. The Implant Maintenance Course is designed to equip dental hygienists and dental therapists with the evidence-based knowledge, practical skills, and clinical confidence required to assess, maintain, and monitor dental implants safely and predictably.
This course will also explore the unique biological environment surrounding dental implants and the role of biofilm. It will transform how you view dental plaque by explaining how it forms within minutes, behaves like a living city, and protects itself against both mechanical and chemical attack.
There is a dedicated hands-on component, focusing on practical protocols and strategies for safe and effective instrumentation around dental implants, enabling delegates to apply learning directly to clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Perform a structured and systematic peri-implant assessment.
- Differentiate between peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis using current classification criteria.
- Identify local and systemic risk factors associated with peri-implant disease and implant failure.
- Be able to apply instrumentation and decontamination techniques safely around an implant.
- Implement evidence-based implant maintenance protocols within routine clinical care.
- Recognise when peri-implant disease requires escalation or referral and communicate findings clearly to the dental team and patient.
