Oral hygiene instruction is paramount in ensuring that patients are utilising the correct tools and techniques to give them the best chance at achieving optimal oral health. As dental professionals, we all have a duty to educate our patients, but signposting patients to see a Dental Hygienist or Dental Therapist can allow patients to receive tailored oral hygiene advice.
Top tips for effective oral hygiene instruction:
- Utilisation of the test drive electric toothbrush:
- The iO model of the oral b test drive is a great tool to assess the pressure used by the patient when brushing. There is also a Sonicare version for users of this brand that has similar pressure sensors.
- Using the test drive brushes after applying the disclosing solution can show the patient how the correct angle, speed and pressure with the brush can remove the biofilm from the tooth surface and along the gumline. If you don’t have these to hand contact your local representative.
- Test interdental brushes/floss at every visit
- Test interdental brushes or floss to ensure the correct fit for effective plaque removal.
- Give the patient the interdental brushes you have tested with them to take home so they know which ones to purchase and continue using them.
- Don’t assume the patient knows how to use them straight away, even if they have been using them for a long time. Showing the patient the correct technique, then asking them to demo it back to you can be helpful for you and the patient, as you can adapt their technique if needed.
- Make adaptations if patients have reduced manual dexterity or struggle with access
- Single tufted/interspace brushes are great for those hard-to-reach areas such as the wisdom teeth and lingual gingival margins.
- For patients struggling with grip, using some putty to mould their hand around the toothbrush handle may be helpful.
- Long-handled interdental brushes may be easier to reach posterior spaces.
- Keep everything positive!
- The key to a happy, motivated patient is praise and positivity regarding their efforts. No one likes to feel like they are being told off, so always try to keep oral hygiene instruction upbeat and informative.
